Gender Differences in Heterosexual Dating: A Content Analysis of Personal Ads

Traditionally, men are perceived as the initiators of dating activities, with women as submissive followers. In this view, paying for a date is the responsibility of the man. This study examined how much money Korean heterosexual college men have paid for dates during the past decade. Many women have become initiators of the dating process as society has become more egalitarian, but many studies have reported that men still pay for the first few dates. Dating typically involves a rather formal pattern in which participants know one another, or want to get to know each other, with a perceived possibility of a future relationship [ 1 ]. Dating usually involves a set of normatively guided social relationships and activities, which requires some expenses for the participants [ 2 ]. Traditionally, men play a more active role in dating activities, including asking a woman out, planning the date, paying for the date, and taking her home. Shifting into an industrialized society, the gender roles have become more androgynous and the process of dating has shifted into less traditional ways. As women have increased their access to earned income, there has been a rising ideological and behavioral commitment to egalitarian relationships [ 3 , 6 , 7 ].

Even more so we overlook that coercion and abuse happens inside of romantic relationships shared by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered LGBT teenagers. My Urban Institute colleagues Pamela Lachman, Jennifer Yahner, Janine Zweig, and I recently conducted a study focused on the rates at which LGBT teens in relationships are physically, psychologically, digitally, and sexually abused and coerced by their partners.

We found that LGB teens in relationships experience abuse significantly more frequently than teen heterosexual couples. We also found that lesbian, gay, bisexual females, bisexual males, and transgendered teens each experience different types of abuse at different rates.

Heterosexual dating websites. 18, — Nearly one in 10 men who say they’re straight have sex only with other men, a New York City survey.

The authors of the studies say their findings challenge the stereotype that same-sex relationships aren’t as healthy or secure as heterosexual pairings. In the first study, researchers at the University of Urbana-Champaign compared 30 committed gay male and 30 committed lesbian couples to 50 engaged and 40 older married heterosexual couples, as well as dating heterosexual couples. The researchers found that all the couples had positive views of their relationships, but the more committed couples gay or straight resolved conflict better than the heterosexual dating couples.

The belief that committed same-sex relationships are “atypical, psychologically immature, or malevolent contexts of development was not supported by our findings,” noted lead author Glenn I. Roisman added that gay males and lesbians “were generally not different from their committed heterosexual counterparts on how well they interacted with one another, although some evidence emerged the lesbian couples were especially effective at resolving conflict. The second study — conducted by researchers from the University of Washington, San Diego State University and the University of Vermont — examined how sexual orientation and legal status affected relationship quality among 65 gay male and lesbian couples in civil unions, 23 gay male and 61 lesbian couples not in civil unions, and 55 married heterosexual couples.

The three-year study found that same-sex couples were similar to heterosexual couples in most relationship areas and that legal status didn’t seem to be the overriding factor affecting same-sex relationships. Regardless of civil union status, same-sex couples were more satisfied with their relationships, reported more positive feelings toward their partners, and reported less conflict than married heterosexual couples.

The researchers did find that same-sex couples not in civil unions were more likely to end their relationships than same-sex couples in civil unions or married heterosexual couples. This suggests that protections offered by a legalized relationship may have an impact on same-sex couples, said the researchers, who plan to examine that question in future research.

One hundred sixty-two upper-division college students responded to measures about dating under two instructional conditions, one describing their dating experiences and the second their dating preferences.

Both traditional and emerging scripts portrayed participants experiences and preferences, with the expression of sexual desire perceived as positive for both sexes.

Traditional heterosexual dating and courtship scripts (e.g., men pay for date, women take partner’s last name in marriage) reflect different standards of desirable.

Indeed, there are many strong, go-getting, and capable women out there who, when single and ready to mingle, refuse to even text a guy first. Oh, and why they sure as hell should be. The perks of defying these stereotypes, however, abound for both women and men. Making the first move can not only be empowering for women, but also help to dismantle performative gender roles—like men being the primary breadwinner—that may put strain on relationships in the long run.

By vocalizing their intent and desires, women may also experience more freedom and sexual liberty, especially at a time when the public dialogue surrounding consent is at an all-time high. A recent study from Colorado State University suggested that women are less likely to swipe right on prospective male partners if the dating app profiles of those prospective male partners feature a photo of them posing with a pet cat. In the study, women between the ages of 18 and 24 were shown photos of two different male subjects both with and without a cat. In both cases, the women tended to review the catless photos more favorably. Once the cat showed up, that number rose to 45 percent.
